Frequently Asked Questions

Your Bonded Title Questions, Answered

The questions our clients ask most often — and what you should know before starting.

The Basics

What is a bonded title?

A bonded title is an official, state-issued vehicle title that's secured by a surety bond. It's the standard legal process most U.S. states provide for vehicle owners who can't produce the original title — typically because it was lost, never transferred, or the seller is unreachable.

Once your bonded title is issued, you legally own the vehicle. After a state-defined waiting period (usually 3 years) with no ownership disputes, the bond is released and the title converts to a standard clean title.

Is the bonded title process legal?

Yes. The bonded title process is created and administered by each state's titling authority (DMV, DOR, or equivalent). It exists specifically for situations where the original title is missing.

We guide you through your state's official procedure. All paperwork is prepared according to your state's requirements, and you remain in control of your application at every stage.

How is this different from doing it myself at the DMV?

You can absolutely do it yourself. Most people who come to us tried first and ran into one of three problems: they couldn't tell which forms applied to their situation, they got conflicting information from different DMV employees, or they submitted paperwork that was rejected for reasons no one explained clearly.

We work from your state's current requirements every time, and we know what causes rejections in your state specifically.

Timing & Cost

How long does the whole process take?

Typically 2 to 8 weeks from intake to title in hand. The variation depends on your state's processing speed, whether a VIN inspection is required, how quickly you can obtain the surety bond, and whether your case has any unusual elements (inherited vehicle, missing seller, prior DMV rejection, etc.).

How much does the surety bond cost?

Surety bond costs are set by surety companies, not by us, and they're typically 1–10% of the bond amount your state requires. Bond amounts are usually 1.5x to 2x your vehicle's appraised value. For a $5,000 vehicle, a bond often costs between $100 and $200.

We'll tell you up front what to expect for your state and vehicle.

What does Luxe Motors Co charge?

Our flat service fee is $250 — the same price every state. We collect it in two parts:

  • $100 retainer due at the start of service (after your intake review)
  • $150 balance due before we deliver your completed case files

This fee covers our research, state-specific paperwork preparation, and step-by-step guidance through the process. See the full pricing breakdown.

What costs are not included in the $250?

The $250 covers our work. The following are paid separately to the relevant party at their published rates:

  • Surety bond cost (set by the surety company; typically a small percentage of the bond amount)
  • State DMV fees — registration, sales tax, title fees
  • VIN inspection (where required by your state)
  • Vehicle appraisal (where required by your state)

We tell you exactly what to expect for your state and vehicle before you commit.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes — three of them:

  • Eligibility Refund. If our case review determines your situation doesn't qualify for a bonded title in your state and we can't identify a viable alternative path, we refund your $100 retainer in full.
  • Document Accuracy Promise. If a paperwork error on our end causes a rejection by your state, we correct and resubmit at no additional charge.
  • No Surprise Fees. Our $250 service fee is fixed. Any third-party costs are quoted up front in writing before you commit a dollar.

What we can't guarantee: state processing timelines, surety bond approval (set by the surety company's underwriter), or that every situation has a bonded title path. We can guarantee you'll know where you stand before any money changes hands.

Your Situation

Do you work in my state?

Yes — we provide state-specific guidance for all 50 states. View our state coverage page to find yours.

What documents will I need?

The exact list depends on your state, but most cases require: a bill of sale (or affidavit if one isn't available), proof of identity, photos of the vehicle and VIN, any prior registration or paperwork you have, and a surety bond once we've determined the required amount.

You'll receive a complete state-specific checklist after your intake review.

What if the seller has disappeared or can't be reached?

This is one of the most common situations we handle — the bonded title process was designed for exactly this. You don't need the seller's cooperation or signature. The surety bond protects against ownership disputes, which is why states accept bonded titles in cases where the chain of ownership is broken.

I inherited a vehicle without a title. Can you help?

Yes. Inherited vehicles are common cases. Depending on your state, you may need probate documentation, an affidavit of heirship, or the bonded title process. We'll identify the correct path based on your specific circumstances.

The DMV already rejected my application. Can you still help?

Yes. In fact, this is when our work matters most. We review the rejection notice, identify what was missing or incorrect, and prepare a corrected submission. A previous rejection doesn't disqualify you from receiving a bonded title.

Does my vehicle qualify for a bonded title?

Most road-legal vehicles qualify, but states have a few common exclusions: vehicles reported as stolen, vehicles with active liens, vehicles that have been salvaged (these may need a salvage title path instead), and in some states, vehicles older than a certain age may not require a bonded title at all.

Submit your intake and we'll confirm whether bonded title is the right path for your case.

Working With Us

What happens after I submit my intake form?

You'll get a confirmation email, and one of our process specialists will review your case within 1–2 business days. We'll follow up by email with our assessment, what your state requires, and a clear quote for our service.

Do I have to commit to anything by submitting the intake?

No. The intake is free and doesn't commit you to working with us. It just gives us what we need to assess your case and give you an accurate plan.

Are you a law firm or a DMV?

No. Luxe Motors Co is not a law firm, and we are not a government agency or the DMV. We are professional process guides who help vehicle owners prepare clean, complete bonded title applications according to their state's procedures.
